THE MUTILATOR

Buddy Cooper & John Douglass, USA, 1984, Arrow Films

BY SWORD. BY PICK. BY AXE. BYE BYE.

Easily one of the most deranged trash-slashers, THE MUTILATOR is a feel-bad coming-of-age violence machine that lives up to its name.

It’s a tale as old as time: when a little kid accidently shoots his mom in the back with a rifle, his Dad flips out and sets Mom’s corpse against the couch. Then Dad sips a cocktail. Ten years later, Dad asks the grown-up kid and five of his friends to close up the family’s tacky beachside condo for the season. And that’s when the medieval hatchet shows up.

Originally entitled FALL BREAK (watch out for the incongruous theme song of the same name, sounding like an unholy collaboration between Billy Joel and the Doobie Brothers), THE MUTILATOR feels like it was assembled by a schizo on a meth binge, and has earned a “holy grail” reputation due to its highly inventive and gruesome kills courtesy of FX wizard Mark Shostrom (VIDEODROME, EVIL DEAD II).
