THE HANG UP

John Hayes, USA, 1970, Vinegar Syndrome, Sexploitation

John Hayes was one of the most unique cinematic voices to emerge from the ‘60s/’70s underground film scene. A failed playwright, Hayes’ films were bleak, sexually charged morality tales that combined Tennessee Williams’ troubled souls with R. Lee Frost’s exploitation stylings.

HANG UP follows the forbidden affair between a tempted L.A.P.D. vice cop and a mysterious young prostitute. Set against a world of pimps, pushers and sexual deviates, HANG UP is a powerful indictment of law-enforcement hypocrisy, a creative commentary on the sexual revolution and human nature, and a whole buffet of sleazy betrayal.
