CENTRESPREAD

Tony Paterson, Australia, 1981, Umbrella Entertainment, Cult

Here’s to the Australian no-budget early-‘80s future sex melodrama with a difference! Had CENTRESPREAD been Italian or an episode of “Red Shoe Diaries”, it’d be known the world over; thankfully the Ozploitation canon has many strange, unique objects left for discovery.

The directorial debut of Tony Peterson (veteran Ozploitation editor of MAD MAX and THE SURVIVOR), this nutty dystopian ditty depicts a society where old-fashioned nookie battles against a world invaded by rules, regulations and computer control.

Bits of VIDEODROME, MAD MAX, and LIQUID SKY can be seen in CENTRESPREAD’s world at the brink of the 21st century where social stratification is rigidly enforced, spending power is directly related to social status, and the only manifestation of violence is in magazine pages. There’s a hazy plot in there somewhere, but honestly we’re here for the atmosphere.
