DARK AUGUST

Martin Goldman, USA, 1976, Arrow Films, Horror

"Fascinates with its manifest dread of the very land and people its brutish urban protagonist aches to live among."
— Stephen R. Bissette, Temple Of Schlock

DARK AUGUST is a singular mesmerizing force of strange. The story is simple but the storytelling is free-jazz and elliptical, almost like if Nic Roeg (THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, BAD TIMING) was giving first-time filmmaker Martin Goldman advice (and opium). Fleeing his fresh divorce and big city headaches, a swingin’ New Yorker relocates to Vermont and immediately mows down the granddaughter of the local embittered elderly warlock with his car. Psychic assaults and ‘70s occult hysteria ensue as rural sorcery and buckshot editing techniques (in a good way) are unleashed.
