FREEDOM

Joseph Sargent, USA, 1981, Multicom, Cult

“Mare Winningham and Jennifer Warren are two very good reasons to watch Freedom… a family drama that is well directed, believable and often touching.” - Janet Maslin, New York Times

16 year old Libby Bellow and her mother do not get along. Constantly locked in a vicious cycle of argument after argument, Libby longs for freedom from her chaotic situation. Her escape finally comes in the form of emancipation, setting her off on a journey of soul-searching and self-discovery. She eventually joins up with a traveling carnival where she gradually learns lessons about life, love, birth and death. As these lessons make Libby older and wiser she begins to wonder if maybe, despite all the turmoil, true happiness was at home all along.
