IN WHICH WE SERVE

Noel Coward and David Lean's early collab is the CITIZEN KANE of war movies, along with a precursor to Lean's more celebrated works. In the midst of WWII, renowned playwright Coward engaged Lean (who was then only a young film editor) to help him realize his vision for an action drama about Royal Navy sailors fighting the Germans in the Mediterranean. Coward and Lean co-directed this large-scale project — an impressive undertaking, especially considering neither of them had directed for the big screen before. IN WHICH WE SERVE became an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, and was a major breakthrough for both creators.
