Winner of the Jury Prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, Ken Loach’s RAINING STONES brings inner-city poverty to the fore. The unemployed Bob (Bruce Jones) faces an increasing succession of disasters as he attempts to afford a communion dress for his daughter while still being on the dole. Rather than accept a loan from his priest, Bob’s soon in hock to loan-sharks. Loach’s gags range from deadpan Northern banter to slapstick and scatology, but they don't overshadow the political acuity of Jim Allen's script. RAINING STONES’s incredible story rattles along amid much tea-drinking, blue banter, and a strong cast of characters, misfits, saints and arseholes.
