SIGNS OF LIFE

Werner Herzog, Germany, 1968, Shout! Factory, Arthouse

SIGNS OF LIFE is the debut feature from German iconoclast Werner Herzog (FITZCARRALDO, NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE) that dives headfirst into the same kind of duty-bound madness as tales like Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS and Miguel de Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE. German soldier Stroszek and his compatriots are directed to watch over a munitions cache kept in an isolated fort off the coast of Greece. Their new assignment proves far more difficult than expected, however, as cabin fever settles over the crew and Stroszek’s mind falls into the furthest depths of a dangerous insanity. Exploring the cruel absurdities of colonialism with bored-to-death Nazis and chicken hypnotism, SIGNS OF LIFE is as idiosyncratic an introduction as any to Herzog's provocative cinema.
