The debut Eighties slow-cinema jam by Taiwanese legend Edward Yang (YI YI, MAHJONG, TAIPEI STORY). Often cited as the opening shot of the Taiwanese New Wave, THAT DAY… intertwines memories and the illusion of reality, reflecting the country’s rapid changes through the life experiences of nuanced female characters. Two estranged friends reunite and end up reminiscing, dreaming and sharing their deepest secrets in this intimate chamber piece. Yang had to seriously convince his studio to allow future camera star Christopher Doyle (CHUNGKING EXPRESS, 2046, LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE) to shoot the film, which would go on to win Best Cinematography at the 1983 Asia-Pacific Film Festival.
