THE CRAZY FAMILY

Gakuryū Ishii, Japan, 1984, Error 4444, Cult

“Mixing sledgehammer social satire with rapid-fire dementia, this is an unforgettable excursion into the recesses of middle-class values.” – Shock Cinema Magazine

THE CRAZY FAMILY comes from Gakuryū Ishii (formerly Sogo Ishii), one of Japan’s leading filmmaking visionaries who aided in the creation of his country’s own cyberpunk movement. Having recently relocated his family from a cramped apartment in Tokyo to a spacious suburban home, Katsuhiko is hellbent on keeping his picture-perfect idea of success alive. But when the new house starts rotting from the inside, Katsuhiko deteriorates with it and his family soon join him in their own descent into madness. Like a termite infestation, this savage slapstick satire gnaws away at the idea of the “perfect family” until the foundation falls through, giving new meaning to the idea of nuclear destruction.
