THE STENDAHL SYNDROME

Dario Argento, Italy, 1996, Vinegar Syndrome, Horror

A raucous standout in Argento’s later filmography! Dario’s daughter Asia stars as detective Anna Manni, who’s captured by the serial killer she’s hunting after she faints in a Florence art gallery. After her escape, her psychiatrist diagnoses Stendhal syndrome: a rare condition where individuals are overwhelmed in the presence of great works of art. Returning to her hometown of Viterbo where she has been advised to rest up, Anna continues to psychologically unravel, all the while sensing that the killer has unfinished business with her. This ‘90s return to brutal Italian horror after a brief American excursion sees Argento aided by veteran DP Giuseppe Rotunno (AMARCORD, FELLINI SATYRICON) and a mesmerizing Ennio Morricone score.
