The first feature film from the South American country of Suriname, made soon after the country’s successful independence from centuries of Euro colonial rule. This Shakespearian ‘70s romance by Dutch indie icon Pim de la Parra (born and raised in Suriname himself) captures the clash between very old and very new worlds. Its story is that of Roy and Rubia: lovers from different cross-pollinated ethnic and religious backgrounds whose affair threatens to tear apart both their families…and the soul of Roy’s other lover from back in Holland. Fifty years later, WAN PIPEL (“One People”) is a sharp time capsule of a unique period in post-colonial struggle.
