NORTH SEA IS DEAD SEA

Hark Bohm, Germany, 1976, Severin Films, Arthouse

German filmmaker Hark Bohm’s Seventies juvenile-delinquent riff on “Huckleberry Finn” is a delight for those hooked on Wenders, Fassbinder and Herzog. Casting his own two adopted sons as schoolboy enemies decked out in denim, Bohm fashioned a landmark hit about outsider friendship. 13-year-old Uwe lives with his mother and abusive alcoholic father in a Hamburg housing project. When he discovers that the classmate he’s been bullying has built a raft from scrap wood, they hatch a plan to run away together and sail to the North Sea. Bohm doesn’t shy away from the harsh milieu of big-city ghettos, where running away is sometimes the only option for angry youth.
