NUDE IN A WHITE CAR

Robert Hossein, France, 1958, Radiance Films, Arthouse

Though best known to French moviegoers as an actor in RIFIFI and the popular ANGELIQUE film series, Robert Hossein also carved out a fascinating, unexpected second career as a director. Drawn to pulpy material and crime stories in particular, Hossein’s works were quite different from other French New Wave filmmakers of the era.

Following his explosive debut with THE WICKED GO TO HELL in 1955, Hossein re-teamed with celebrated crime writer Frédéric Dard for this sultry mystery evoking Hitchcock and classic noir. On an evening stroll, Pierre (Hossein, also starring) is invited into a white car by a female voice. Upon entering, he finds a nude blonde with her face obscured by shadow. After sharing an intimate moment, Pierre tries to get to know her but she produces a revolver and orders him to leave. Astonished by the events, Pierre determines to find the woman and traces the car to an address where two blonde sisters live: one who claims to never go out and another who is paralysed.
