THE GHOST OF PETER SELLERS

Peter Medak, UK, 2018, Severin Films, Docs

At the peak of his box-office power and comedic genius in the early 1970s, Peter Sellers invited Peter Medak – whose recent smash THE RULING CLASS was nominated for both the Palme d’Or and an Oscar – to direct the pirate epic GHOST IN THE NOONDAY SUN. What seemed like a sure thing quickly became a one-for-the-books nightmare that included an unfinished script (re-written by fellow comedy legend / Goon Show member Spike Milligan), rough seas, sinking ships and Sellers’ own shockingly erratic behavior. Four decades later, Medak revisits this personal and professional fiasco to search for answers – and possibly redemption – over the filmmaking experience that nearly destroyed him.
