Noir filmmaker icon Edgar Ulmer (DETOUR, STRANGE ILLUSION) turns to historical melodrama for this star vehicle for Hedy Lamarr, a woman of ambitious nature playing Jenny Hager, a 19th-century woman of ambitious nature. Set in a newly-minted American during the 1820s, we follow Jenny from her humble beginnings to her blossoming into a fully-fledged social ladder climber: marrying a wealthy older man, seducing his son and getting entangled with his foreman, leading to a web of deception, betrayal, and tragedy.
