TROUBLE IN MIND

Alan Rudolph, USA, 1985, Shout! Factory, Arthouse

“A movie that takes place within our memories of the movies." - Roger Ebert

Alan Rudolph’s rise to the top of the auteur re-appraisal list is in part due to TROUBLE IN MIND, his beautifully grimy Eighties ensemble piece set somewhere between future times and the past of countless classic film noirs. In the fictional, hypnotic Rain City, ex-cop Hawk (Kris Kristofferson) mingles with down-on-his-luck father Coop (Keith Carradine), Coop’s radiant innocent wife Georgia (Lori Singer), a street thug ripped straight from a cyberpunk dystopia (Joe Morton) and a preening mob godfather (John Waters muse Divine!). At the center of it all is Wanda’s: a dive diner run by Hawk’s ex (Geneviève Bujold) where the characters will intersect, changing them forever.
